Stop USB Drives Opening Apps with Windows 11 AutoPlay

Choose what happens when you connect a USB drive: open a folder, show a prompt or take no action. Set and test Windows 11 AutoPlay without disabling the drive.

If connecting a USB drive opens File Explorer or launches an app you did not want, check AutoPlay in Windows 11. Set Removable drive to Take no action for a quieter connection, or Ask me every time if you want to decide when you plug something in. You can change that default while leaving AutoPlay available for memory cards.

AutoPlay controls Windows’ response to connected media. It is separate from whether the PC can detect the drive or whether a file will open when you deliberately select it. Microsoft describes AutoPlay as a choice of handlers, folder views or no action . Choosing a quieter response is a preference change, not a repair for a missing or unreadable drive.

Choose a response that fits the drive’s job

The useful removable-drive choices are:

  • Take no action: no automatic AutoPlay action.
  • Ask me every time: a prompt lets you choose.
  • Open folder to view files: File Explorer opens the drive’s contents.

Acer’s Windows 11 guide documents these options and the separate defaults for removable drives and memory cards.

Our recommendation is Take no action when you regularly attach a backup drive or an external SSD and already know which app you want to use. Choose Ask me every time if the same connection sometimes means copying documents and sometimes means importing media. Automatic folder opening suits a drive whose main job is browsing files.

For example, suppose you connect an external backup SSD several times a week. You can let the backup app handle the backup and open File Explorer yourself when needed, rather than making a folder window part of every connection. That is a workflow choice; AutoPlay is not the backup scheduler.

Change the Windows 11 setting

Use the route in Acer’s documented Windows 11 instructions :

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices > AutoPlay.
  3. Leave Use AutoPlay for all media and devices on if you want to retain different automatic behaviours for different media.
  4. Under Removable drive, choose the response you want.

If you want AutoPlay off broadly, turn Use AutoPlay for all media and devices off instead. The main switch and the removable-drive default serve different purposes: one is the broad control; the other lets you choose a response for that media category.

Before changing anything, note the current switch position and selected default. That gives you a straightforward way back if you prefer the old behaviour.

Test the result with a drive you already trust

Use a familiar drive containing disposable test files. Do not use an unknown USB device as a test.

  1. Finish any copying or saving and safely eject the drive.
  2. Reconnect it and check the result. With Take no action, expect no AutoPlay action; with Ask me every time, expect a choice; with Open folder to view files, expect File Explorer.
  3. Open File Explorer yourself and confirm that you can still browse the drive.
  4. If you want to undo the change, return to AutoPlay and restore the switch and default you recorded.

This checks two different outcomes: whether the unwanted automatic response has stopped, and whether normal access still works. A quiet connection is the intended result when you chose no action. A drive that is absent from File Explorer needs a different diagnosis.

If a different app still opens

First check whether you changed Removable drive or Memory card. They have separate defaults. Also check the main switch before expecting a per-media default to take effect.

Available app choices depend on registered AutoPlay handlers. Microsoft’s documentation explains that apps must register to appear as handlers ; a missing option is not a reason to select a random substitute.

If an app still launches after AutoPlay is off, check that app’s own connection or import preferences rather than assuming AutoPlay caused it. On a work or school PC with unavailable controls, ask the administrator before changing policies or trying registry workarounds.

A quieter connection does not make an unknown drive safe

Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency advises avoiding USB devices from unknown sources, scanning trusted devices with updated antivirus before accessing their files, and exercising caution with AutoRun and AutoPlay. Its 24 April 2024 advisory also describes malicious devices that masquerade as ordinary USB storage.

That wider risk is why this setting should not be treated as permission to plug in a drive you found. Use AutoPlay to choose the response you want from known media; keep deciding separately whether the device and its files deserve your trust.
