How to Find and Export Steam Screenshots on Windows

Find Steam captures in the desktop client's Recordings & Screenshots viewer, export a copy to your PC, or upload one to your Steam profile.

A hand holds a fictional game-world image in front of a monitor, illustrating a Steam screenshot exported as a separate file.

When you press F12 in a Steam game, Steam captures a screenshot, but it does not post the image to your profile. To find it in Steam for Windows, open View → Recordings & Screenshots. From there, export a copy to your PC, copy it to the clipboard, or upload it to Steam.

Steam’s screenshot feature depends on the Steam Overlay. F12 is the default capture key, and Steam lets you change it in settings. These steps describe the Windows desktop client as documented by 9 October 2025. Valve’s original screenshot announcement documents the Overlay requirement and default key; a Steam community guide from June 2025 shows the current menu names.

Capture a screenshot with Steam

  1. Open Steam and launch the game you want to capture.
  2. Press F12. If nothing happens, check that the game supports and has the Steam Overlay enabled.
  3. To change the capture shortcut, open Steam → Settings → In Game and change Take a screenshot. Choose a key that is not already needed for an important in-game action.

Steam introduced its screenshot feature for games that run the Overlay, and the capture key can be changed in the In-Game settings. If a particular game does not run with the Overlay, use its own photo mode or screenshot feature instead.

Find the screenshot in Steam

In the Steam desktop client, select View → Recordings & Screenshots. Valve’s November 2024 announcement introduced the combined viewer name when Game Recording became available to everyone. The viewer can contain captures from more than one game, so use its game filter if the image is not immediately visible. Valve’s September 2024 client update added search to that filter.

Select the screenshot you want to use. The preview confirms you have the right capture before you export or share it.

Export a copy or upload it to Steam

These actions have different results:

  • Export a local file: Use Steam’s option to export the screenshot as a new file on your computer. This is the route to take when you want an image you can attach to a message or open in another Windows app.
  • Copy to the clipboard: Choose the clipboard option when you want to paste the screenshot directly into another app.
  • Share on Steam: Choose Share on Steam, check the visibility setting, then select Upload. This publishes the image to Steam rather than simply saving a separate local copy.

Valve’s September 2024 client update lists clipboard, Steam Chat, phone and local-file export options. The June 2025 Steam community instructions show the screenshot upload flow and visibility control. Before making a capture public, check that it does not reveal private chat, account details or another player’s information.

If the screenshot is missing

Check these in order:

  1. Confirm the viewer is showing the game you captured. Change its game filter or search the filter list.
  2. Check the shortcut under Steam → Settings → In Game. The key may have changed from F12.
  3. Check that the Steam Overlay works in that game. Steam’s screenshot feature relies on it.
  4. If the shortcut works in another Overlay-compatible game but not this one, the issue is likely specific to the first title or its Overlay support. Check the game’s own capture instructions.

You do not need to hunt through Steam’s installation folders just to get a usable image. Use the viewer’s export option for a separate Windows file, or use Share on Steam when you want the capture on your profile. F12 takes the picture; the viewer controls where it goes.
